We begin on the Hampshire Avon with Chris late as usual and Bob not needing his landing net, as his dog Raps is able to land the fish for him before they are returned good as new to fight another day.

Then it’s off to Scotland and the River Tweed for the main purpose of this iconic 49-minute show – the search for a salmon.

After a little guidance from ‘Lady Luck’, who shows how fish to 18lb can be caught on the fly, the odd couple head off to the magnificent River Spey to see if they can track down a sea trout or salmon without the help of a ghillie. But with the river low, only brown trout are playing ball.

However, the programme is given a magic ingredient as Hugh Miles’ brilliant wildlife camerawork captures eagles, otters, red squirrels, barn owls, osprey and deer going about their daily business.

Not to be beaten, Chris, Bob and dogs return to the river in the autumn, when the river is higher and the fish are in altogether more co-operative mood.
