We caught up with Texas bass pro Russel Cecil to get a tutorial on when and how to fish wakebaits for bass. For Cecil, wakebaits excel during the fall months toward the backs of creeks when shad start balling up. Although a lot of search baits perform at this time, wakebaits excel at covering water and mimicking shad while showing pressured bass something different at the same time.
Wakebaits are essentially topwater crankbaits so there’s some nuance when it comes to gear selection. Cecil shares how monofilament line, a cranking stick and a slightly slower gear ratio enhance your hooking and landing percentages. Consider this advice when your water temps dip in the 60’s this fall and be prepared for a good time.
